Spring 2018 Childhood Research Grants Announced

We recently gave approximately $160,000 toward childhood arthritis research in the form of research grants. The grants are funded through the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA); small grants were given to pediatric rheumatologists and fellows small grant research awards were given to third year fellowship students.

Spring Small Grants

Three small grants of $25k each were awarded. Congratulations to:

  • Erica Lawson, University of California, San Francisco (San Francisco, CA): The Impact of Pediatric-to-adult Care Transition on Health Care Utilization and Medication Adherence among Youth
  • Sheila Angeles-Han, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati, OH): Measuring Vision-related Function and Quality of Life in Children with Uveitis
  • Kimberly Lewis, The University of Texas at Austin (Austin, TX): A Pilot of Metabolomics in Symptom Science: The intersection between Pain, Fatigue and Cardiovascular Risk in Teens with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

Fellows Small Grants

Seven Fellows Small Grants of up to $25k each were awarded. Congratulations to:

  • Jessica Neely, University of California San Francisco (San Francisco, CA): Longitudinal Immune Profiling for Biomarker Discovery in Patients with Juvenile Dermatomyositis ($24,343 grant award)
  • Anna Patrick, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, TN): Effector T Cells: An Assessment of Activity in Polyarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis ($24,998 grant award)
  • Cory Stingl, Duke University (Durham, NC): Precision Decision in the Treatment of Juvenile Dermatomyositis ($19,278 grant award)
  • Albert Chow, Seattle Children’s Hospital (Seattle, WA): Oral Health and Microbial Dysbiosis in Juvenile Dermatomyositis ($24,950 grant award)
  • Evan Mulvihill, Nationwide Children’s Hospital (Columbus, OH): Analysis of CB4 Gene Copy Number as a Predictor of Cardiovascular Disease in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus ($25,000 grant award)
  • Natalie Rosenwasser, Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City, NY): Development of Novel Urinary Biomarkers for Lupus Nephritis ($25,000 grant award)
  • Meiqian Ma, Cohen Children’s Medical Center (Queens, NY): Validation and Usefulness of the 2012 SLICC Lupus Classification Criteria for Pediatric Lupus ($11,275 grant award)
