Arthritis Foundation Awards Funding to Researchers on the Path to a Cure

Committed to accelerating the search for new solutions to arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation has awarded nearly $5.5 million in scientific research funding to 11 individuals we’re confident can help get us there. Our 2015 request for “Delivering on Discovery” proposals resulted in 167 submissions from across the United States and Canada. A panel of advisors selected the proposals they felt showed the greatest promise of achieving a faster cure for one or more types of arthritis.

The winning proposals, which range in amounts from $216,000 to $1.35 million, cover a diversity of topics and include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis and lupus. What makes this solicitation process particularly unique is that we opened it up to virtually anyone who can provide bold, new ideas that will potentially speed up the discovery of a cure, whether or not the applicant has prior experience in arthritis research. We want to engage the most creative minds in our quest for solutions to arthritis.

Submissions also needed to demonstrate a clear interdisciplinary pathway to viability in the marketplace, as well as be something people with arthritis want and that they believe is important.

“Those with arthritis are depending on us to foster a scientific discovery environment that thrives on innovative solutions,” says Ann Palmer, Arthritis Foundation president and CEO. She also noted that the 11 proposals being funded will improve clinical decision making and health outcomes through the use of new products, tools and technologies.

As the Champion of Yes, the Arthritis Foundation is embarking on a cutting-edge scientific strategy that takes advantage of new science and technology. We’re opening up the search for a cure to anyone, including young or experienced scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers and technology experts. Yes, we believe a cure for arthritis is very possible in our lifetime – and on behalf of everyone with arthritis, we’re determined to do everything we can to make that happen.

  1. This is excellent news and I wish all the Awardees the greatest success! I would only add that in any medications or treatments discovered or created that significant focus should also be the side effects of any medication or treatment. Many people, including myself, cannot take some medications because of the severe side effects, even in medications for which side effects are not considered to be severe. More doctors and patients need to report side effects that they discover to the FDA so that accurate reporting and guidance is available.

    1. Jeanne, I agree with you 100%. I also have severe side effects with medications and unable to get a treatment plan because of this. I do report it to the Pharmacy and Dr., Although I am guilty for not reporting it to the FDA. I have thought of reporting it several times at the time I am suffering the side effects, and just add it to the list of medications I cannot take. Thank you for bringing this up, because I have always wondered if other people like me don’t take the time to report it to the FDA. I can promise you that I “will” from now on, and others should follow through also. It is wonderful that we have such dedicated Researchers working hard to find cures or to at least lesson the severity of diseases, but unless we report the bad side effects, they will never know that changes may need to be made to some of the compounds and come up with medicines that can help so many people that aren’t able tolerate the side effects. Once again, thank you for bringing this up.

  2. I would love to know more about the cure progress of arthritis. I was diagnosed when I was 8 years old. I have had arthritis for almost 12 years now.
