Advocacy committees like mine help to chart the course of local and state-wide advocacy action for our arthritis community. Many of our committee members serve as Arthritis Foundation Advocates and Ambassadors, at both the state and federal level.

Every summer Congress takes a break and each member of Congress departs Washington, D.C. for their home district. This break dates back to a time when most members of Congress had other responsibilities back home, most notably returning to their farms for harvest. The break, often referred to as August Recess, has evolved into an opportunity for the members to head home and meet with their constituents.

On Monday, June 13, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed Senate Bill 129, an important piece of prior authorization legislation, into law. The bill, sponsored by Senators Capri Cafaro and Randy Gardner:
- ensures that prior authorization requirements or restrictions are listed on the health insurer’s website and allows providers and patients to obtain prior authorization through a web-based system;
- ensures that any new or future prior authorization requirements are disclosed prior to the new requirement being implemented;
- requires that once a prior authorization has been approved, the insurer will not retroactively deny the service based upon previously approved medical necessity or coverage criteria; and
- requires a faster turnaround on prior authorization requests and a streamlined appeals process in the event a prior authorization is denied.

Our advocacy team is incredibly active at the state level, leading the way to make sure that arthritis patients have access to critical medications. Our volunteer Advocates make a significant impact and help achieve tangible results by sharing their stories and asking elected officials to support legislation that is important to them and their families. But beyond fighting for key legislative changes and being vocal in raising awareness and sharing stories that help put faces with arthritis, we also make strides for the arthritis community when we link the voices of patient with the provider community – as we have done recently and successfully in New York and Ohio.
